Nan Nitecka

marker artist • paper artist • fiction writer

I’m a 31-year-old white, disabled, gender fluid lesbian who specializes in traditional art and fantasy fiction. I also do a lot of beta and sensitivity reading—some of the novels I've beta read were published last year (2021)!I'm Góral American, and I often draw on my heritage for inspiration while creating.I'm a lover of good stories, bright colors, tea, and ferrets.Especially ferrets.

Ever since I was a child, I wanted to create vibrant art. I'd always get frustrated when the colored pencils available to me couldn't create colors deep or bright or beautiful enough. I had no talent for paint, either, and not enough patience to learn. But when I borrowed some of my mother's stamping markers, I immediately fell in love.

Unfortunately, markers aren't lightfast, so I'll be trying paint out after all. Gouache is a water-based paint with vibrant, opaque colors, and I can't wait to get started! Stay tuned ...

* I will still use markers for personal pieces and for commissions where clients only plan to keep a hi-res digital scan.

I've also drawn on my heritage to make papercraft wycinanki pieces. I've since adapted this Polish folk art to create my own papercraft style, and it's been my favorite ever since.

My art has been made into posters for concerts and plays and has been featured in four zines:
+ Wedding Vows
+ Lilies Anthology, Vol. 7
+ Wayward Leaves
+ Love and Life

I’ve been writing fantasy stories since elementary school. My very first dream was to become a published author, and I’ll be damned if I let that die.

I've also beta-read novels published in 2021. I very much enjoy being a beta and sensitivity reader; feel free to contact me if you'd like me to be a sensitivity reader! All I ask in return is a minimum $3.00 tip sent to my ko-fi.

if not for my arthritis, I would have pursued a full-time career as an editor. For now, I write old school using pencil and paper. It's unsurprisingly 100% more satisfying for someone with autism and a thing for textures (but it also takes twice as long).

My current project is a YA fantasy about a young boy who, in exchange for great talent, makes a deal with a mountain devil that costs his mother’s soul. It also draws on the folk culture of the góral people, a running theme in my art.
